Nancy Strueber confirmed which providers were in attendance at the start of the meeting. Provider Announcements and Updates Service Access & Management, Inc. (SAM) SAM is currently not accepting Blended Case Management (BCM) referrals. They are asking everyone to call the Base Service Unit (BSU). The Administrative Case Management (ACM) staff has been reaching out to the individuals and working with them until BCM has openings. BCM supervisors have been working closely with the ACM supervisor and his team so they are aware when BCM has a discharge and are able to transition an individual to BCM if still needed. SAM is hoping to start accepting referrals again in the next week or so. Email notification will be sent out when referrals open back up. Healthy Communities Partnership (HCP) HCP will be starting another cohort of Strengthening Families Program on st October 1. PerformCare Update Brian Gannon PerformCare had no updates to report. Community Resource Spotlight Drew Michael Taylor Foundation Marcie Taylor from the Drew Michael Taylor Foundation presented on their supports and services. Drew Michael Taylor Foundation is located in Shippensburg. It is a nonprofit organization that provides free grief, education and support programs for children, teens and adults who are grieving the death of a loved one. Even though it is located in Shippensburg, anyone from around the area is welcome to go to their programs. Drew Michael Taylor Foundation was founded in memory of her son, Drew who passed away in June 2006 due to an auto accident when he was three and a half years old. Marcie noted that they have been on the grief journey for a long time and they are learning lots of lessons along the way. Marcie went back to school. She used to be a high school teacher but retired a year after Drew passed away so she could focus on the foundation full time. Marcie has a certification in a field called Thanatology from Hood College in Frederick. Thanatology is the end of life and bereavement studies. As a result of this certification, Marcie can do speeches, sermons and talks from a more theoretical and educational background, not just life experiences. Marcie wanted to dispel a few misconceptions of what the foundation provides. They receive calls frequently asking for grief counseling and needing referrals for their services. Drew Michael Taylor Foundation does not provide any counseling or therapeutic services. There is no cost associated with what they do provide which is peer-led grief support. The peer-led model is the training they received in Portland, Oregon at the Dougy Center. This is on children and families. Basically, the model is where you connect grievers with fellow grievers for validation, encouragement and under guided facilitation. MH 2 9/13/24 Mental Health Provider Meeting Friday, September 13, 2024 Another misconception is that the foundation only provides services to families with child loss. This is inaccurate. Since 2008, the foundation has one program that meets for seven (7) sessions every fall and spring at the elementary school on campus at Shippensburg University. Dinner is served followed by separate support groups for children, teens and adults with the death of any loved one. The most common losses are parents and grandparent but the foundation sees those who have lost cousins, friends, other family members, best friends, etc. If you love someone and the grief is real for you and your family, any child, grandchild, 18 and under plus any adults in the family who are accompanying that child on their grief th meet Monday nights starting September 30 for seven (7) sessions (ending th November 25). There are two (2) Monday nights during this time sessions are being accepted for the program. Volunteer training for the sessions is next week. RSVPs should be turned in one week prior to the program start date but attendees will be accepted through the second session of the program. The foundation did receive a grant to offer a Spanish speaking group as There are three (3) bilingual facilitators lined up to help facilitate this. If anyone needs a flyer in Spanish please let Marcie know. In addition to the family program, the foundation offers six (6) different adult support groups which can be found on the website https://drewmichaeltaylor.org/. Under the Grief Support tab there is a flyer that can be printed out. Marcie mentioned the following groups o Bereaved spouses meet the first Thursday of the month. o Grief Knits meets the second Thursday where you get together with fellow grievers to do arts and crafts. There is a lot of positive mental health benefits associated with knitting. o Healing Together meets the third Thursday which is for adults who are grieving the death of any loved one from any circumstance, such as illness, accident, overdose, suicide, etc. o Bereaved parents meet the fourth Thursday. o The Perfect Blend (coffee, crafting and community group) meets weekly on Wednesday at 10 am to noon. MH 3 9/13/24 Mental Health Provider Meeting Friday, September 13, 2024 o Just One Lunch Bunch goes for lunch once a month. This is for bereaved spouses. Once a month the group (typically of eight) picks different restaurants throughout the area to eat lunch. o There are children workshops and teen workshops every few months usually on a Sunday afternoon. Most flyers are available on the website under the Events tab. There is a more detailed description of each group that is offered. Drew Michael Taylor Foundation also has a good grief book club discussion where people can read books about grief themes and come discuss with others. Sometimes you can learn about grief from fictional characters which can be easier than when it happens in real life. The foundation tries to do a lot of unique things for grief education and support. They try to provide people with various coping skills so they can find what works for them. A quote that is their mantra is a quote from the book Tuesdays with Maury. It says They work to try to help people figure out what this new relationship looks like where their loved one is not physically present, how to move forward in a positive manner, taking them with you, as you embark on this new normal.
