OW' planet is in trouble, along with tearing down oW' forests and
other natural resoW'ces, we are £lling up what little space we
have with trash. In Franklin County alone, gO,OOO tons of trash
are produced annually. Landfill space is limited and solid waste
disposal options are few so we must create a solution to this
problem. The answer is clear. The solution is RECYCLING!

My name is Wally Waste-Not and I am here to teach you about
recycling and what you can do to help your community in
Franklin County as well as the environment. We will learn what
to recycle, how and why so that you can begin your own recy-
cling program at home.

We can start inside YoW' house. The first thing you should do is
set up some containers in which to put your recyclables. You
can use trash cans, boxes or even grocery bags just so they will
hold what you are recycling. Most communities with mandatory
recycling provide you with a large green trash can that you
should use.

You can recycle glass, plastic, aluminum, steel and newspaper.
Above are some examples of products around the house that
you can recycle. Not all communities have a curbside recycling
program. Also, plastics may not be recyclable in your program.

munity, please call: the Franklin County Recycling Coordinator at

Even outside there are a lot of things that can be recycled. All
the soda cans that you see laying around your neighborhood are
perfect for recycling. People throw these things away without
thinking that they can be recycled You can pick them up for
recycling and at the same time you will be helping to clean up
the environment.
Throwing away a 1 2 oz. aluminum
beverage can wastes as much en-
ergy as if it were 1 /2 full of gas.
Recycling a 1 2 oz. alu-
minum beverage can,
saves enough energy to
light a 100 watt bulb
for 3-1/2 hoW's.
Aluminum recycling
uses 95% less en-
ergy than manufac-
turing from natural
resources.

Recycling one ton of
paper saves 1 7 trees
and 7,000 gallons of
water.
Recycling aluminum cans for one
year saves enough energy to meet
the residential electrical needs of
Pittsburgh, for almost six years.

When you recycle you
save raw materials as
well as energy.

Every ton of paper that
is not landfilled saves
three cubic yards of
landfill space.
It takes 20 trees to keep one
baby in disposable diapers for
two years.

Many things can be made from recycled materials: Plastic Picnic
Tables; Fences; Siding for Houses; Road Surface; Automobiles;
etc. Not only does this save our raw materials but it also saves
energy. So as you can see, there are many everyday things that
can and are made out of the things that you recycle.
