Over the next several months, OMHSAS will engage with stakeholders, including advocates, individuals receiving services, and family members to assist in developing this plan and to continue to build upon a quality system of behavioral health services, includingAtheA“MentalAHealthAMatters”A and other initiatives. In order to develop this plan and to build on the previous workAoutlinedAinA“ ACallAforA Change,” OMHSAS invites you to participate in our planning process. Four focus group events are being held, where participants will help to identify positive practices to build on, identify unmet needs, and consider innovative opportunities. Plan to attend one of the three remaining forums so you can help ensure that Pennsylvania continues to be a national leader in meeting the behavioral health and substance use needs of our citizens. PENNSYLVANIA AWARDED SAMHSA SYSTEM OF CARE GRANT Recently, Pennsylvania received a $4 million four-year grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that willAenableAallAofAPennsylvania’sAcountiesA to become part of the national system of care movement to more effectively serve youth with complex behavioral health challenges and their families. The grant will enhance the efforts of the Pennsylvania System of Care (SOC) Partnership, where there are currently 11 partner counties and eight learning communities through the existing grant that ends in 2015. The SOC Partnership will continue to provide technical assistance to existing and new counties as they establish local leadership teams and progress towards the defined SOC standards: equal partnership among youth, family and systems partners in all aspects of integrating the child-serving systems so that desired outcomes are achieved cost effectively through evidence-based practices and natural supports. An additional focus of the new funding will be on implementing the enhanced National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in health and health care. The State Leadership Team will be responsible for coordinating the work of the new grant at the state level. Youth leaders, family leaders and top officials from mental health, child welfare, juvenile Justice, education, and the drug and alcohol proudly serve as equal partners on the state level team. SECOND SAMHSA GRANT AWARDED OMHSAS also just received notification that Pennsylvania has been awarded a federal grant to fund the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Partnership. The award provides $2 million per year for four years to help create safe and supportive schools and communities by decreasing bullying, youth violence and criminal behavior and promoting healthy development, social and emotional learning and academic achievement. TF-CBT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM LAUNCHED WestAPennA lleghenyAHealthASystem’sA recently announced the national launching of their Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) Certification Program. The program is designed to assist in responding to the increasing demand for TF-CBT certified therapists across the nation and the world. Contact information for therapists who meet the TF-CBT certification criteria and pass the knowledge-based test will be placed on the TF-CBT National Register of Certified Therapists, although this is not required. This register will enhance the accessibility of TF-CBT trained therapists to child welfare organizations, mental health referral services, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and others located throughout the nation. In addition, the register will allow the TF-CBT developers to keep certified therapists updated on important TF-CBT related clinical and research developments relevant to their work in the field. More information at www.wpahs.org/tfcbt WEBINAR PLANNED ON TRAUMA AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENTS The Pennsylvania Community of Practice on School-Based Behavioral Health will present a webinar series in early 2014 addressing what educators need to know about trauma and its effects on students: "Trauma and Learning: Navigating the Crossroads." The webinar series will address three major issues: 1) the physiological effects of trauma on student growth and development; 2) student's perspective on their schools' response to trauma; and 3) what educators need to know in order to assist students struggling with trauma. The series features multiple presenters including experts in psychology and school safety as well as youth, who will speak about their own experiences. Registration information will be available at www.papbs.org and www.pattan.net. The webinars will be archived and made available as streaming media on both websites, following the live broadcast. BUREAU OF AUTISM SERVICES AND ASERT HOST COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS TOUR The Bureau of Autism Services and the Autism Services, Education, Resources & Training Collaborative (ASERT) are offering FREE interactive meetings for individuals with autism, families and professionals across the state. Information will be provided on the updated Pennsylvania Autism Census numbers, and discussion will include the impact of the increasing number of children with autism who are transitioning into adulthood and will require services. Information about Pennsylvania’sAadultAautismAprograms;A the first programs of their kind in the nation, will also be provided. In addition, statewide and regional resources will be shared, including resources specific to surrounding counties for each meeting location. There will be opportunity for questions and feedback.
