Kohl’s giving scholarships to young volunteers $400,000 will be given to young volunteers who are making positive impacts in their communities. Last year 101 students from Pennsylvania won. BookFlix There is a new online early literacy resource available through school and public libraries across Pennsylvania. BookFlix pairs videos of classic picture books with informational e-books. All you need to connect to over 125 pairs (picture book/ informational book) in English and more than 25 pairs in Spanish is a library card. Check out what it has to offer: http://www.eatright.org/kids/ Integrating behavioral health services into primary care On September 9, 2013, the Pennsylvania GLS grant sponsored a one day workshop on integrating behavioral health services into primary care. Speakers gave clinical talks that included screening in primary care, engaging parents, suicide risk assessment and medication management of high risk youth. Also discussed: systems change models that helped sustain the integration of MH services into medical practices. These talks were all web cast and included participants from across the US, Canada, Japan, Germany and Brazil. This archived workshop is now available online here for anyone interested in integrating mental health and medical services. Recipes for Healthy Kids The USDA Team Nutrition recently released 30 award-winning recipes from the national Recipes for Healthy Kids Competition. All of the recipes selected are child-tested & approved and use only healthy ingredients, featuring Child Care and Adult Food Program (CACFP) foods. The recipes are low in total fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt. The cookbooks include: a guide to make buying easy; information about food safety; and what to do for children with allergies. Prescription Drug Take-Back Location Map The Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) has introduced an interactive map that displays the location of prescription drug take-back boxes throughout the state. The boxes, an initiative of Governor Corbett's Healthy Pennsylvania, provide a safe and secure collection site for unwanted prescription medications. This map can be found at www.ddap.gov or www.pacdd.org. The test would look for high levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which might help distinguish depression from normal childhood angst, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Roughly one in 50 American kids suffers from depression, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Action Alliance releases first national research agenda for suicide prevention A Prioritized Research Agenda for Suicide Prevention: An Action Plan to Save Lives is the result of an intensive and collaborative three-year effort by the Research Prioritization Task Force of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. The research agenda calls on the suicide prevention field to align efforts and more directly prevent suicide attempts and save lives. This first-ever Prioritized Research Agenda for Suicide Prevention sets the goal of reducing suicides by 20% in five years and 40% in ten years. These applications will be treated as high priority and decisions will be expedited similar to the way that SSA now handles disability claims from Wounded Warriors. SSA plans to begin the new process next month. Violence Prevention Funding The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) has opened their 2014 Violence Prevention Programs funding announcement. This targeted announcement provides the opportunity for non-profit agencies and units of local government to apply for funding to start a new project or expand an existing implementation of one of the following programs: Big Brothers Big Sisters (Community- Based Only), LifeSkills Training (Middle-School Version Only, Project Toward No Drug Abuse, Aggression Replacement Training, The Incredible Years, Strengthening Families 10-14, Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies, Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. The ACA also provides new opportunities to divert people who are struggling with addiction or mental health problems from incarceration to treatment, but this requires access to timely information to identify those who qualify for alternatives to incarceration programs and design effective treatment plans. "Justice and Heath Connect" is a national resource designed to help justice and health agencies work together to identify new opportunities under the ACA to divert individuals struggling with addiction or mental health issues to treatment. The JH Connect website includes a series of resources on the implications of the ACA for justice and health initiatives. Countywide Registry for Persons In Need for Residents of Franklin County created by Franklin County Department of Emergency Services. This program is designed to assist the special needs community who are physically unable or require assistance to evacuate their homes during an emergency situation. The information from the application process will be input into the County E-911 system to be utilized in the event of a distress so that emergency responders can instantly identify the special needs of the caller. Prior knowledge of the needs of the caller could make a difference during a crucial time. The Registry is voluntary & all information obtained will be utilized for emergency purposes only and will be strictly confidential.
