PAYSPI LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE; PLANS
NIGHT AT THE BALLPARK
The Pennsylvania Youth Suicide
Prevention Initiative (PAYSPI) has a sleek
new website look at www.payspi.org. In
addition to great resources, training, and
information about county suicide
prevention initiatives, there are links to
lastAyear’sAPS AcontestAwinners;Aand news
about the current PSA contest. There is
also a page dedicated to Suicide
Prevention and Awareness Night at a
Harrisburg Senators baseball game on
May 16, to be held in collaboration with
the PA Adult/Older Adult Suicide
Prevention Coalition. You can support
suicide prevention in Pennsylvania by
coming to the game and/or inviting
others (a portion of the ticket price will
support suicide prevention). The 2014
PSA contest winning submissions will be
displayed on the big screen during the
game.
REQUESTS FOR CONFERENCE PROPOSALS
Infant Mental Health Conference:
Proposals are being accepted for
workshops at the Sixth Annual
Pennsylvania Infant Mental Health
Conference to be held Oct. 16-17, 2014 in
Hershey, PA. The purpose of the
conference is to promote social
emotional development of infants and
young children through developing high
quality relationships with families and
caregivers. Topics include innovative
programs or therapies for young children,
interventions for parents and caregivers,
promoting attachment, and meeting
special needs. Deadline for proposals is
April 30, 2014. More information at

Suicide Prevention Conference:
Proposals are also being accepted for the
Pennsylvania Suicide Prevention
Conference, to be held Oct. 15-16, 2014
in State College, PA. Workshops will be
held in five tracks: youth/transition age
youth, adults, older adults, military/law
enforcement, and survivors. Deadline for
proposals is March 28, 2014. Proposal

AWARENESS DAY

BULLYING PREVENTION RESOURCES
The Highmark Foundation, in
collaboration with the Center for Safe
Schools and the Center for Health
Promotion and Disease Prevention, is
presenting several community screenings
of the film “Bully” over the next several
months. The 45-minute film promotes
awareness about bullying issues. It has
been edited and does not include the
more controversial material found in the
theatrical release. The character-driven
documentaryA“Bully”AfollowsAtwoAyouthA
and their families over the course of a
school year. Bullying is a widespread
problem that includes and affects all;
whether victims, perpetrators or silent
bystanders.A“Bully”AaimsAtoAbeAaAcatalystA
for change in the way we deal with
bullying as parents, teachers and society
as a whole. A facilitated session
conducted by Pennsylvania bullying
prevention trainers and consultants will
be held after the viewing with
professionals who can offer additional
insights and solutions to this nationwide
problem. The event is free and open to

The Center for Safe Schools also sponsors
a professional development webinar
series every third Thursday on bullying
prevention. The webinars are held from

Finally, the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration’s Winter

MORE RESOURCES FROM SAMHSA
SAMHSA has launched Girls Matter!, a
new six-part webinar series that will
discuss challenges, opportunities, and
strategies for supporting girls. The
webinar series is designed to 1) increase
theAbehavioralAhealthAworkforce’sA
understanding of the needs and concerns
of adolescent girls (ages 12-18), and 2)
bring visibility and attention to the
specific behavioral health concerns of
adolescent girls. Girls Matter! features a
90-minute webinar each month covering
a related behavioral health topic. The
first webinar was on February 25, but will
be available online. More information,

The Mayors’ Resource Guide on
Behavioral Health Issues, available from
SAMHSA, highlights the unique role
mayors and local public officials can have
in shaping community responses that will
promote recovery, prevent behavioral
health disorders, reduce the impact of
behavioral health problems when they do
occur and ensure that needed treatments
and services are available. It includes tips
on engaging the community, and
prevention and treatment resources.

The first edition of the Behavioral Health
Barometer (2013) provides a snapshot of
the state of behavioral health in the
United States. It presents a set of
substance use and mental health
indicators as measured through data
collection efforts sponsored by SAMHSA,
the Centers for Disease Control, and the
National Institute on Drug Abuse. The
report is available for the nation as a
