To: Steering Committee of the Greater Chambersburg 21St. Century Partnership
"Impact of increasing Hispanic population: public forum"
Thank all of you for serving on the committee and what I feel was a very good first
th
meeting neson Wednesday November 16 .
Y
We started by asking why we were there and ended with a consensus of how we might go
about achieving this.
Why: We identified four reasons as follows:
1) educate whole community
2) improve communication
3) eliminate discrimination
4) improve perceptions
How: The Partnership's original thought was to assemble a panel of the organizations
that had the most contact with Hispanics. The panel would be asked to discus how the
increasing Hispanic population has impacted them as well as the strategies they are
taking, opportunities, challenges and communication issues.
The steering committee shared examples of what other attempts have been made and are
being made along these lines. We reached a consensus that the model the CASD is using
might best serve us at this time.
CASD, three or four time a year, invites all the ESL school children and their parents to
an evening meeting with their teachers. There are approximately 500 such students, K to
12 and typically 30 or so show up.
It was suggested we start piggy backing these sessions. But first we would try and get as
many youth and adult Hispanic leaders to our next meeting to plan what would be most
helpful to them, the idea being to include businesses, healthcare, law enforcement, legal,
housing, etc. Whomever the Hispanics themselves feel might be able to answer their
questions or help them in any way.
The steering committee was asked to identify these leaders and invite them to our next
meeting on Dec. 14th. at 2:00 pm at the C.O.C.1 would ask each of you to forward these
names and contact information to me a.s.a.p. If we don't or can't get a fairly good
number of such leaders to our next meeting we will have to rethink our next step.
