Franklin County Environmental Conservation Program Franklin Farm Cleanup In coordination with the Great American Cleanup Pennsylvania and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful initiatives,
PennDOT provided us with the materials necessary for County volunteers to pick up trash and debris on Franklin Farm, Saturday, May 28th. It was a successful morning as we learned much
about our environment and the things to be found when you’re looking for them. Some of our experiences included... Remembering the Forgotten Our &irst stop was the Cemetery behind the
Falling Spring Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. We paid our respects to those that came before us in silence while planting &lowers and sharing a Memorial Day Bouquet. Nature’s Camou&lage
While stepping through the mud and manure as we crossed the &ield to the I -81 fence, it was a surprise to &ind a snake unmoved in the corn&ield. The coloring blended well with the ground,
moss, and vegetation. As we walked around, it continued enjoying the warm sunny day. A truly amazing camou&lage lesson came while working along the fence. Reached down to pick up something
and found arms around a fawn. It was hidden perfectly against the dried vines and fresh blooming honeysuckle. Some of us were right beside it and never saw it. When stepping back, it
ran to the safety of the &ield and within moments was out of sight again by simply laying down. Solar Energy We discovered not only does the new Franklin County Visitor’s Bureau billboard
send a great message to those driving by, it is spotlighted by solar power. Now that’s conservation at work...preserving both our heritage and energy. Way to go Visitor’s Bureau! Decomposition
We picked up all kinds of things, which had some breakdown or decay. The most concerning though, were the Styrofoam coffee cups and packaging. There were signs of damage, but wear or
decomposition were not visible. Summary Overall, Franklin Farm is well maintained. Even so, there are eco friendly alternatives available for use to protect our environment. Try these
items when possible and actively recycle. MAY 31, 2011 Vision: As good stewards, Franklin County will promote environmental conservation through education and information sharing by
pooling the knowledge and experience of both internal and external County resources for the benefit of its workforce and communities.
