Warren Elliott, Chairman Robert L. Thomas Cheryl S. Plummer CHIEF CLERK/COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR John A. Hart COUNTY SOLICITOR Welton J. Fischer April 2001 Dear Franklin County Resident: The .Board of Commissioners recently adopted a new comprehensive plan for Franklin County to serve as a guide for land use, development and economic progress. The overall goal of the plan is to promote positive growth while maintaining the rich heritage and rural character of the County. A critical component of our planning efforts involves the environment. We support recycling as an effective and practical solution to limiting the amount of waste that is sent to landfills, which ultimately preserves our natural resources and quality of life. The more we recycle and reuse household items, the less strain we impose on our environment. With this in mind, we are pleased to provide this Family Recycling Guide and hope it will serve as a resource for your household recycling activities. In addition, we encourage you to purchase items that are made from recycled materials and support businesses that collect items for recycling. We would like to thank you, the residents of Franklin County, for your commitment to the protection of our environment and the conservation of our natural resources. Sjncerely, G. WaMtM tQ9¡$ttt:: G. Warren Elliott, Chairman r- ~;;l'rf2..-- Robert L. Thomas ~~~~J Franklin County Family Recycling Guide Page 3 WHY RECYCLE? We're running out of places to dispose of trash. Recycling reduces the need for landfill space. nergy supplies are diminishing and costs are rising. sing recyclables in manufacturing requires less energy. sh disposal costs keep climbing. ycling could reduce trash disposal costs. atural resources are being depleted. Recycling reduces the drain on virgin materials. To protect family health and the environment. Recycling reduces air and water pollution and litter. To help raise money for community groups and projects. Most recyclables can be soldfor cash. BEFORE YOU RECYCLE... .~ · Avoid the purchase of bulky, disposable items. · Pass on magazines, books and catalogs to neighbors, hospitals and nursing homes. · Buy products in reusable containers or in simple packaging. (The average family of 4 pays $1 for packaging in every $11 spent for groceries). Reduce the amount of material requiring disposal: Reuse as much as possible · Plastic containers can be reused for food storage, glass jars for nails, tacks, etc. · Reuse wrapping paper, plastic bags, boxes and lumber. · Give outgrown clothing to friends or donate it to a local charity. · Buy beverages in returnable containers. · Try repair before you consider replacement of lawn mowers, tools, vacuum cleaners, TV's. · Donate broken appliances to charity or find out if a nearby vocational school can use them for parts or to have students practice repairing them. · Offer furniture and household items no longer needed to college students, and friends, or donate to charity.
