HomeMy WebLinkAboutLucyJoshua Riddle of the Town of Chambersburg in the County of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania merchant and Fanny Rush wife and all whose these presents shall come greeting. Whereas the said Joshua and Fanny Rush on the third day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred and ninety five at Fairfax County in the State of Virginia upon becoming owners of a certain female negro child, slave named Lucy aged five years and three month by the gift of Capt. John Harper father of the said Fanny Rush intending that the said negro Lucy should become free as soon as she should arrive at the age of seventy eight years did in presence of two creditable witnesses grant and agree the said Negro Lucy should become perfectly free and emancipated from slavery as soon as she should arrive at the age of twenty eight years agreeable to the acts of General assembly of the State of Virginia in such case made and provided. Now Know ye that we the said Joshua and Fanny Rush in order to secure to the said Negro Lucy an Education suitable to the condition of such a servant and also to secure to her suitable freedoms when she shall arrive at the said age as also for and in Consideration of one Dollar to us in hand paid for and on behalf of the Pennsylvania society for promoting the abolition of slavery and the relief of the free Negroes lawfully held in bondage and for improving the condition of the African Race; do grant covenant and agree to and with the said society that we teach or ensure (??) the said Negro Lucy to read the Gospel or otherwise to give or cause the said Negro Lucy to serve?? one full year schooling at some english school and that as soon as the said negro Lucy shall arrive at the age of twenty eight years use our heirs or assingees(??) shall give unto the said Negro Lucy one spinning wheel and one suits of upanl (???) one of which shall be new and we do farther for heirs executors administrators and assignees covenant and agree to and with the said Society that of we our heirs or asigns shall fail to perform the just inserted covenant (namely to teach or cause the said Negro Lucy to read the Gospel or otherwise to give her one full years schooling) before the said Negro Lucy shall arrive to the age of Twenty one years that then and in that case we our heirs and assigns shall forfiet all further claims to the service of the said Negro Lucy and she shall from that period become perfectly free. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals this twenty fourth day of January 1797. Sealed and Delivered in presence of James R. Riddle John Riddle Franklin County. On the 24th day of January One Thousand Seven Hundred and ninety seven. Before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the peace in and for said COunty Came Joshua Riddle and Fanny Rush his wife in the aforegoing Instrument of writing named and acknowledged the same to be their act and deed. In testimony where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day of date arose. John Riddle.
