HomeMy WebLinkAboutMarkTo all whom it may concern, I Owen Aston of Chambersburg in the County of Franklin and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania do hereby declare that this bearer hereof Mark a man of colour hath been to me and towards my family for many years an obliging mannerly and faithful servant who by the laws and customs of the said Commonwealth heretofore has been and now is a regularly registered slave. I the said Owen duly considering the foregoing and for other good causes and considerations me hereunto moving Do of my own mere motion renounce and Release unto the said Mark all claims whatever that I have to his services arising from the premises stated from and after the thirty first day of October which will be in the year one thousand eight hundred and five, 1805. Nevertheless this Letter of Emancipation is to be valid only on the condition to be unequivocally fulfilled on the part of the said Mark viz that he the said Mark will faithfully serve me the said Owen from the date here of until the first day of November which will happen four years after the first day of next month and also on this further condition, that if the said Mark doth previous to the first day of November which will be in the year one thousand eight hundred and five, depart from my service without leave or otherwise create to me expenses (involuntary sickness excepted) he shall make restitution in such manner as by the laws of Pennsylvania are provided between Masters and servants, In Testimony, whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty third day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and one, 1801.
